Getting it Right - Providing Toilets for Disabled People Being able to use a toilet when you are out and about is something that many of us take for granted. When Isobel McLeish was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she realised that this is not always the case for disabled people.
Her own experiences made her aware of how the issue can affect the lives of disabled people. As she herself says “if you are unable to use a toilet then you are really robbed of your independence and can become reluctant to leave your own home”.
As a result of Isobel's determination to do what she could to improve the situation, two public information leaflets are now available. The leaflets were sponsored by the Planning Department at Scottish Borders Council. Isobel also received support from the Social Work Services Department.
‘Getting it Right – Toilets for Disabled People’ - helps disabled people choose the type of toilet which will best meet their needs
- has a useful checklist to make sure the correct toilets are being provided.
‘Get it Right – Providing Toilets for Disabled People’
- helps providers have a better understanding of the needs of disabled people
- gives information about the regulations that providers have to be aware of.
